DUBLIN, Ireland - An Garda Siochana and the Road Safety Authority (RSA) are urging motorists to avoid driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs during the St. Patrick's Day Bank Holiday weekend. With 33 road fatalities reported in Ireland so far this year, authorities emphasize the importance of planning safe transportation if socializing. Options include designating a sober driver, pre-booking taxis, using public transport, or arranging lifts with trusted individuals. Walking or cycling under the influence is also discouraged due to safety risks.

An extensive Garda Roads Policing Operation is currently underway and will continue until 7 am on Tuesday, March 18. All on-duty Garda members are focusing on enforcing laws against intoxicated driving, speeding, mobile phone use while driving, and not wearing seatbelts. Chief Superintendent Jane Humphries highlighted that, on average, at least one driver is arrested every hour for driving while intoxicated, with the majority under the influence of alcohol. She stressed that driving under the influence can have fatal consequences.

Minister for Transport, Darragh O'Brien, reaffirmed the government's commitment to road safety, citing recent measures like reduced speed limits on rural roads and mandatory roadside drug and alcohol testing for drivers involved in serious collisions. These initiatives, Gardai say, are aimed to progress toward the Vision Zero goal by 2050.

The RSA's 2024 survey revealed that one in ten drivers admitted to driving after consuming alcohol in the past year. Michael Rowland, RSA Director of Research, Standards, and Assurance, reminded the public that intoxicated driving significantly increases crash risk and carries severe penalties, including driving disqualification and fines.

Authorities advise all road users to exercise caution, plan journeys in advance, and intervene if someone attempts to drive under the influence. The collective goal is to ensure a safe and enjoyable St. Patrick's Day weekend for everyone.
