Sophia Wilson, a forward for the Portland Thorns and the U.S. women's national team, said she is pregnant with her first child.
She and her husband, Arizona Cardinals wide receiver Michael Wilson, posted the news to Instagram on Wednesday.
'Life just keeps getting sweeter,' she captioned a photo of the couple in which she is holding a series of ultrasound scan images.
The couple married in January.
Sophia Wilson, then known as Sophia Smith, won a gold medal with the United States at the Paris Olympics last Aug. 10, her 24th birthday. She was the Most Valuable Player in the National Women's Soccer League in 2022 -- the youngest in league history -- as the Thorns won the league title.
The Thorns, who selected her with the No. 1 overall pick in the NWSL draft in 2020, posted a congratulatory message to Wilson, as did the league and several players. With the national team, Wilson has 58 caps. Last season with the Thorns, she had 12 goals and six assists in 20 matches. She was named to the First Team Best XI.
Wilson did not mention what the duration of her maternity leave would be. Under the landmark collective bargaining agreement signed in September, players are granted six months of fully paid leave with contract protections.
The Thorns open the 2025 season on March 15 on the road against the Kansas City Current.
