Mathieu Perrault had a hat trick and the host Montreal Canadiens collected their first victory of the season by defeating the Detroit Red Wings 6-1 on Saturday.
Perrault signed with Montreal during the offseason after scoring nine goals in 56 games for Winnipeg last season.
Ben Chiarot, Mike Hoffman and Christian Dvorak also scored for the Canadiens, who had just four goals in their first five games. Jake Allen made 26 saves.
Dylan Larkin scored for the Red Wings, who have lost two straight after going 2-0-1 in their first three games.
Power plays were the story in the first period, as all three goals were scored with the man advantage.
Larkin gave Detroit the lead at 5:25 with Chiarot in the penalty box for tripping. Larkin ripped a shot from the left circle past Allen off a feed from Moritz Seider.
The Red Wings committed three penalties in the final nine minutes of the period and Montreal cashed in on two of them. With Gustav Lindstrom in the box for tripping, Chiarot scored his first goal of the season from the left side off a Jonathan Drouin pass.
Hoffman tallied at 16:15 after Filip Zadina was whistled for high sticking, as he fired a shot past a screened Greiss. Sami Niku and Dvorak had the assists.
Montreal made it 3-1 at 3:17 of the second on Dvorak's first goal of the season. His shot from the right side deflected off a defenseman's skate and past Greiss. Niku notched his second assist of the game.
The Canadiens continued the flurry at 7:45 of the period. Perrault took advantage of a Wings turnover near the blue line and sent a wrist shot past Greiss' glove hand.
Perrault scored in front at 9:59 off a pass from Tyler Toffoli to make it 5-1. That prompted Wings coach Jeff Blashill to pull Greiss.
Perrault notched his hat trick with 6:44 remaining after the Red Wings pulled their goalie.
